Increased dose of DMG

The past week, I have been ramping up Nicholas’s dose of DMG to 3 capsules three times a day (9 caps). As of today, we are at 9 capsules per day.

Everyone has noted (without being asked) how much more he is talking. So glad they’re telling me, because I noticed it too – and it’s great to know you aren’t just imagining things because you want to.

He’s also singing unprompted – and this all started while increasing his original dose (3 caps) to 9 caps. When it was time to clean up, Nicholas broke out in the “clean up” song from school. Clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere, clean up, clean up…. I was shocked. He’s sung this about 4 times so far this week – I am thrilled.

Happy Holidays!!

I just wanted to with you all a Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanzaa! Feliz Navidad! Froliche Weinachten! Happy Holidays! I hope 2009 brings us all that much closer to getting our children back. 2007 was a pretty crappy year for us and for Nicholas. 2008 was amazing in comparison. I have high hopes for 2009 and hope that you’ll all be with us for the ride.

It’s always been difficult for me to see that any gifts have come from Nicholas having autism – but one thing I do have – is the experience of absolute delight and being overcome with proudness every time Nicholas does something or says something I thought he would never do or say. For that, I am thankful. For the occasional glimpse into normalcy, I am thankful and remain overwhelmingly hopeful that recovery is possible. For us and for all of you.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Round 15: Complete

Another one bites the dust.

Update 3 on Enhansa

Dropping the dose to 1/2 (75mg) per day was the right choice to make. No more crazy Nicholas. No more regression. Thank goodness. Only thing is that he’s still obsessed with playing with water like he was ages ago, but other than that, he’s doing really well.

Update 2 on Enhansa

Nicholas has been on Enhansa for about 3 weeks now. The first week, the die off was insane, but we pushed through. Now, he has regressed – and I am hoping this is a healing regression – and he will come out the other side doing better. I did drop his dose down by half yesterday and he’s doing a little better today, but we’ve seen behaviors like defiance, not understanding/hearing us, not responding to his name or when we’re talking to him, totally obsessed with playing with water in the sink, massive temper tantrums, etc – these are all things that we have not seen in quite some time and they’ve just re-emerged all at the same time.

That said, for the first time ever, he told me that his tummy hurt tonight. He’s never ever said anything like this before. There have been other little hints that lead me to believe that it is doing something helpful – but it’s just the getting through this that’s the hard part, for him and for us. Last night, he could not wait for my father in law to come into the house to open his birthday present and Nicholas helped unwrap it for him – the second he walked through the door, Nicholas ran to get his gift – he knew it was his birthday and he got a present. This afternoon, he got on the phone and sang happy birthday (another first) – He’s understood concepts like water going down the drain. He’s asking me “mommy, what are you doing?” quite a bit. So, good things are happening… it’s just so hard to see the good through all the regression.

He took me upstairs to open our attic door because he knows Santa is coming and is looking for his presents. I just about cried when I realized what he was up to. (Nicholas, if you can read – your presents are in Mommy’s office)

On Thursday night, we were a couple of hours away from home and had pulled into the parking lot of our hotel. Adjacent to our hotel was shopping complex which we could just see the side of the complex, so signs or anything. Anything except for the big lit up Toys R Us logo on the side of the building. It’s 11pm and Nicholas joyfully exclaims – Toy Store Mommy! let’s go!
So we checked in, put our stuff in our room and took him to Toys R Us – since they’re open til midnight for Christmas, we figured why not. Nicholas walked around looking at all of the toys and telling us what he wanted. We did manage to get out of there without buying anything (how that was possible, I will never know) But, as we were leaving Nicholas jumped in one of those little rides they have in the front of Toys R Us and put two quarters in (that he had in his pocket) and actually stayed on the ride. He had so much fun steering the wheel and pushing the buttons. This was the first time he has done this – we had never been able to get him on a ride like this – ever. This past summer, we could not get him on any rides when we took him to the Jersey Shore.

So, lots of progress – and lots of regressive behavior.

I dropped his dose down to 75mg on Friday, 12/19 and we’ll keep it there for a bit and see what happens.

Increased Omega 369’s

I added another teaspoon (in the evening) of the Complete Omega 369.

Stopped Advanced Biocidin today

I discontinued giving advanced biocidin today. Nicholas has been on it for a while and figured we would take a break to see if he still needed it. Given we added Enhansa, I did not think both were necessary.

More of Nicholas

Every day, every round of chelation, we see more of Nicholas. He’s now asking “where” people are.

Yesterday morning, he got out of bed and said, “pee pee in the potty – bathroom” – and he did, his diaper was dry and he actually peed in the potty! This was totally unprompted.

Yesterday, when the bus pulled up to drop Nicholas off, I was putting our new Mickey out on the front lawn. Nicholas stayed outside with me, watering all of the plants (in the rain) while I finished it. I didnt have to watch him every single second like I used to. He stayed with me, helped and then we went inside to get dried off (no temper tantrum!) It was 65 degrees out yesterday, so I bet my little man enjoyed making a mud puddle to play in!

This past week, he’s shown interest in other shows, like Christmas shows. We’ve watched Rudolf a few times and even Shrek. He’s loving Monsters, Inc now too. and he still likes Tinkerbell.

Update on Enhansa

I was waiting to post a follow up on starting this supplement because I didn’t want to post half the story so to speak. We went through about a week of die-off. I believe the die-off was prolonged, because I had read somewhere that to start, the dose is every other day – this is not correct. The initial dose is 75mg 2x per day to start. By doing it every other day, I was just prolonging the agony.

Whatever it does, it does really well. Nicholas is doing really well on it (once we got past the die off) and I’m looking forward to increasing his dose, but I’m not doing that until after Christmas.

I did drop the GSE he was getting (24 drops per day) a few days into the Enhansa. We made it through the die-off and I’m not seeing losses since dropping the GSE, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I am very excited to see what this supplement has in store for Nicholas once we get the dose ramped up.
