A Totally Off-Topic Rant: My Review of the Linn Unidisk SC

I apologize to my readership in advance for this posting, but it’s been bothering me for quite some time and I need to get it off my chest and into the eyes of anyone considering buying this or any product from Linn.

A few years ago, my husband had his eye on a very expensive piece of audio equipment. Very expensive. My husband does not ask for much and works very hard, so when he mentioned that he would like to use an upcoming bonus on himself instead of bills, the house, etc., I just could not object.

So, he purchases a Linn Unidisk SC – which plays CDs, DVDs, etc. Well, one day, it decides to stop playing CD’s and DVD’s. You can try 20+ times to get a DVD or CD to play (and that CD/DVD can be brand new out of the package) and maybe you’ll get it to play and maybe you’ll have to try many, many more times before it plays. And maybe you just give up because something is not working right. The unit has been given nothing other than TLC, never been moved, etc. There’s no reason for this to have happened.

So, my husband contacts Linn about getting it fixed under their 5 year warranty – and they claim they don’t have his registration. He even provided the receipt showing the date of purchase and they refuse to fix it under the warranty. Instead, they want over $500 to fix his unidisk. Also, when he contacted Linn, they told him that lasers were not covered under their warranty anyway. The laser is the most important part of the entire unit. And in this case, ours did not even last five years.

So, let the buyer beware. Linn does not stand behind thier products or warranties. Not exactly a company I would ever shell out $4,000.00 to again. Shame on you, Linn!

Autism, Cancer and AIDS

An example of brilliance at the FDA….

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday said children shouldn’t stop taking drugs that treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, despite a study showing the stimulants may be associated with sudden death.

Autism & Toxins, Jay Gordon, M.D.

Great piece by Dr Jay Gordon. Thank you for everything you do, Dr Jay.

Autism & Toxins, Jay Gordon, M.D.

Dr. Karp, if you are going to talk and blog about kitchen cleaners, furniture polish, pesticides and other toxins, how can you possibly ignore the 30-40 injections of potentially risky material we give children in their first 24 months of life? There is absolutely no proof that these shots are as safe the makers say they are and certainly no proof that new combinations of vaccines and hastily created shots are safe enough for our children.

This is exactly the point. And it’s always amazing to me how these doctors talk about how the toxins in our environment are harmful but when they’re injected directly into our child’s body bypassing any methods of defense – they are perfectly okay?

HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK WE ARE?

Dr. Karp and the whiney doctor from “The Doctors” show on TV both seem to need an injection of common sense. Don’t worry, it’ll be thimerosal free.

ANOTHER AUTISM CASE WINS IN VACCINE COURT

JULIA WON HER LAWSUIT WITH THE VACCINE INJURY COMPENSATION PROGRAM! THE GOVERNMENT CONCEDED!

This means that they agreed that the MMR vaccine caused her encephalitis and resultant brain damage (I mean Marvelous Mind – right Howard!!). This is such a huge, huge, huge help for Julia and my family. The government will reimburse all of her past medical expenses (to her, not to us, which I find a little odd, but OK!) and will pay for all future medical expenses that she incurs from her vaccine injury.

Round 36: Complete

40 Rounds, here we come!

Glyconutrients & Autism

In reviewing my punch list of new supplements to research or trial, glyconutrients peaked my interest as something that I maybe wanted to try – but to be quite honest, I’m not quite sold on them. I’m not on the search for the “magic bullet” (or supplement in this case) for autism because there is none – but I did read some stories that stated the kids were improving after they started taking them and also of one story in which glyconutrients was the last missing piece of the puzzle for that child. So, I’ve googled, searched message board archives, etc. and while a good percentage of the feedback was positive – what I read also lacked details of WHY those parents thought it made a difference in their child. So, deciding to try it was not a slam dunk decision like other supplement were. I have never got the “I have got to try this” feeling about this supplement.

Also, it doesn’t take much to see that there are alot of false claims made by those who sell Mannatech’s Ambrotose in addition to Mannatech being a MLM company with somewhat of a sketchy history. (yes, I believe I am being polite) So, much like anything we try on our children – a chance is a chance.

So, I decided to take a chance on Mannatech’s Ambrotose and Nicholas started taking this yesterday alongside his other supplements. While I am giving this supplement a try, I am not going to alter his supplement regiment at all from how it is today and we are going to be giving this at least a one month trial. I will post anything I think is relevant to this supplement here, good or bad.

And because of the controversy, just so you know, neither I nor anyone I know is any way affiliated with Mannatech.

Here’s some more information on it in case you’re interested:

Autism, Ambrotose and Glyconutrients

Added June 10, 2009 – It’s been a week, nothing to report – just wanted to make a note of it.
Added June 17, 2009 – It’s been 2 weeks, still nothing to report.
Added July 5, 2009 – Okay, it’s been a month and I’ve decided this supplement is a keeper at least for right now. Nicholas has seemed to climbed up one more rung on the ladder to recovery. Whether or not this supplement can take credit for this, I do not know 100%, but I will tell you that I changed NOTHING during this time. I didn’t remove, reduce, increase or add any supplements. We did however continue to chelate every weekend, which could be the primary reason for the gains. I’m going to post an update on his progess today, so you can find that post separately, I just wanted to come back and edit this thread with our results. Also, I feel it is important to note that I have no stake in mannatech/ambrotose, financial or otherwise. I do not sell it nor do I intend to. I do not benefit in any way by my reporting this. In addition to his improvements, I no longer have to give him claritin or benedryl and he was getting claritin year round due to allergies. (I took him off of it before starting the ambrotose thinking he was good on just the 6 caps of Transfer Factor, but his allergies did come back. Perhaps I needed to increase the Transfer factor, but I decided to try the Ambrotose first.)

Added September 3, 2009: Well, his allergies have come back. And since I have him on the adult daily dose and they’ve come back full swing – I am not impressed as I had read this would be useful for allergies. Like I said, we have continued with chelation during this time and have continued to see gains. I just don’t think any of his gains can be attributed to this supplement, I really don’t. I haven’t seen the “beneficial effects on brain function” it’s literature mentions – not any more than supplements which did this for Nicholas such as Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Vinpocetine and Enhansa. The literature also suggests prebiotic activity, which I missed until now, and if it does have such activity, we have seen a much better response from Klaire’s Biotagen, which is much less expensive. So, when it runs out, it runs out – and that’s that. Should I see a regression of any kind, we will revisit this supplement and I will update this post. But as of today, we’re done with this one. (PS if you wanna try it, I recommend eBay for the best price.)

*Attn Ambrotose distributors: you DO NOT have my permission to use anything I have said on this blog in an attempt to market this product.

Changes since the last update are:

  • I tried Nordic Naturals Orange Cod Liver Oil instead of the Complete Omega 369 and noticed a difference in both language and eye contact, so I went right back to the Complete Omega 369.
  • I split his supplements into 3 doses instead of 4 (seems to be working)
  • I increased Transfer Factor to 2 capsules 3x a day from 1 cap 3x a day. (I was able to drop claritin and benedryl)
  • I added Chromium Picolinate at mealtimes to keep his blood sugar consistant
  • I added Wild Oil of Oregano and have actually gotten Nicholas to swallow these capsules.
  • I stopped the phosphatidyl serine and phosphatidyl choline for the time being
  • also tried Klaire’s Interfase (not Interfase Plus) enzymes
  • I stopped the creatine – not sure if this is contributing to Nicholas gaining weight, so I discontinued it at this time.
  • I changed the coQ10 to UBQH from Integrative Therapeutics
  • We’re doing a trial of Mannatech’s Ambrotose – so I will not be changing any supplements during this time so I can get an accurate idea if this is something Nicholas really needs or not.

Chlorine and Autism – What parents need to know

Since it’s that time again where schools are letting out, the temperature is rising and swimming pools look more and more inviting by the day – I figured I would post all of the information I have saved regarding our ASD kids and chlorine.

Stan Kurtz: A review of medical literature about chlorinated pool water.

Here are some things that you can do to lessen the effects of the chlorine (in no particular order):

  • Bathing/Showering before and after swimming
  • Epsom Salt Baths
  • Epsom Salt Lotion – I also hear it’s pretty easy and cheap to make your own
  • Kirkman’s Magnesium Sulfate Cream
  • OurKids Magnesium Sulfate Cream
  • Some have reported they fill a spray bottle with water and some epsom salts and then spray down their kids before/after swimming
  • Supplement with Taurine
  • Increasing Magnesium Supplement
  • Gloves in a Bottle Shielding Lotion
  • Increasing probiotics & digestive enzymes – chlorine can cause you to lose good gut flora and digestive enzymes, especially if water is swallowed, so you need to replenish the probiotics and add some digestive enzymes at mealtimes
  • Swimming Pool chlorine can increase yeast overgrowth, so if you see yeasty behaviours return, this could be why.
  • If you have a high-copper kid, you may want to keep your eye on your child’s copper levels since many algaesides contain copper.

  • If you have a pool in your backyard and are looking for alternates to chlorine, here are some links. (I am just providing the links, I have no information or experience with any of these.)

  • Baquacil – I did look into this last year — although some have reported it is impossible to maintain after the 1st/2nd years and can be very expensive to maintain
  • http://www.naturalpoolcleaner.com/
  • Leslie’s Pool Supply has a product called Fresh N Clear that is hydrogen peroxide based
  • Treat your pool at night so that most has circulated and disapated by the morning
  • http://www.chlorfree.net/
  • Chlorine Free Pools and Spas
  • Purification Systems by Carefree Clearwater
  • *If you have other suggestions, please feel free to email me so I can add them or leave a comment and I will post it. Thanks!!
