Daniels, JL, IJ Pan, R Jones, S Anderson, DG Patterson, LL Needham and A Sjödin. 2009. Individual characteristics associated with PBDE levels in U.S. human milk samples. Environmental Health Perspectives doi:10.1289/ehp.0900759.

Synopsis by Kim Harley, Ph.D.

Breast milk from young women – rather than from women older than 35 – has the highest measured levels of commonly used flame retardants known as PBDEs.

A study of breast milk samples from more than 300 women in North Carolina finds flame retardants contaminate the milk from almost three-quarters of the woman in the study. Women older than 35 had the lowest levels of PBDEs in their milk. The highest levels were measured in breast milk from women aged 25 to 29, followed by women younger than 25 years old.

The results suggest that younger mothers may have higher exposure to these flame retardant chemicals through their environment or lifestyles.

PBDEs are chemicals used in electronics, furniture, carpeting and textiles to reduce the risk of fire. In rats, early life exposures to PBDE has been associated with altered thyroid hormone function, hyperactivity and poorer learning and memory. Human health effects are not so well understood.

Most Americans have detectable levels of PBDEs in their blood. Dust and food may be the biggest sources for people. Breast fed babies are exposed through breast milk, however, experts agree that breastfeeding also provides important nutritional and immune benefits for the infant.

The study also found higher levels of these fat-soluble chemicals among obese women.

Interestingly, longer breastfeeding did not appear to lower PBDE levels in breast milk. Measured levels in breast feeding mothers a year after they gave birth were not significantly different from their levels when their infants were 3 months old. Having more previous pregnancies was also not associated with lower PBDE levels.

These findings are in contrast to other persistent pollutants, such as PCBs or DDT, which have been shown to decrease in the mother’s body and her breastmilk with longer breastfeeding. The author’s speculate that levels may not decrease either because mothers’ exposure to PBDEs is on-going or because maternal weight loss after pregnancy continues to mobilize PBDEs from fat stores.

The researchers measured and compared levels of individual and total PBDEs. Measured levels of total PBDEs in the samples were higher than those reported in other studies and ranged widely, from 1 to 2,010 nanograms per gram of fat.

PBDE compounds have been banned in Europe and several U.S. states, and legislation to further limit use in pending in many regions.

Round 66 Complete!!

Done with Round 66!!

Started Cytoflora today

Started with 6 drops – we’ll be ramping up to 5 dropperfuls 2x a day. If we see good things from this, we’ll go as high as 5 dropperfuls 2x a day and gauge the best dose for him.

Update – 1/27/2010: After speaking with a friend, I decided to be a little bit quicker at increasing the dose here. Today was his first day of 2 dropperfuls 2x a day. Nothing to report yet – but no negatives either. Also wanted to note that we have not seen any OCD yet either. Other probiotics with strep strains make him OCD within a matter of a day or two.

Update: January 29, 2010, 9:45 am
This is totally totally totally pre-mature – but yesterday, he was talking like no tomorrow. The stuff coming out of his mouth had us looking at each other in utter shock. (This was at 3 dropperfuls which I gave him twice.) Today, we’re doing four twice. We shall see.

Update: February 5, 2010, 4:14 pm
Nicholas is doing great on this! We’re up to 5 dropperfuls 2x a day and we’re seeing more language, he’s more in tune with us and he really just wants to help us with everything. ….and we’re getting WHY questions!!!

Update – 2/12/2010 – We have not seen any OCD from this supplement like we have with other strep-strain probiotics. With other probiotics containing the streptococcus strain, we would see OCD symptoms in about 2 days which would progressively get worse as time went on. We’ve seen nothing like this with Cytoflora.

Update: February 13, 2010
We’ve finished the first bottle of cytoflora and the results speak for themselves. I was able to remove the additional magnesium he was getting and he’s pooping just fine without it. The language boost was definately a good one – definately worth the money in my opinion.

Update: March 8, 2010
About a week ago, I lowered the dose down to 5 dropperfuls once a day and have not lost the gains we made.

We truly now know the value of Culturelle

I love Culturelle, always have. Nicholas has been on it from the very beginning. It’s been pretty much one of very few supplements that I never changed brands, looked to remove from his regiment, etc. In December, I ran out of it and figured he could go a little while without it until I started placing supplement orders in January. That proved to be very wrong and a huge mistake.

We started seeing a version of Nicholas we had not seen in over a year. Flat out defiance, massive temper tantrums, crying at the drop of a hat – and as if that wasn’t bad enough, his obession with water came back.

Not being a very happy camper with this new improved version of a defiant, temper-tantruming, obessed with water child – I went through my supplement list. What did I change? Did I add anything new? Did I forget about something? At first, I thought it was the methyl-folate I had started giving him (I had since stopped thinking this could be it – it was not) – then it hit me – could this be bacterial? After all, I had run our of his Culturelle. Could it be that easy though? And why would bacteria cause him to be obsessed with playing with water? Previously, when he had the water addiction, inositol stopped that – and I had removed it quite some time ago.

So, I reordered the Culturelle and got him back on it immediately. I also added Physician’s Strength Wild Oil of Oregano, 2 capsules twice a day – not given near probiotics. And after a few days, Nicholas is back. The obessive water play is gone. The massive tantruming is gone. The defiance is gone.

The people in our lives that witnessed this are absolutely astonished that a bacterial overgrowth/infection could make a child act this way. If they can see this happen to a child and also see it rectified with the appropriate supplements/medication/whatever, why is it so hard for the medical establishment, which is failing our children, to simply do their jobs?

Round 65 Complete!

Keeping count!!

Round 64 Complete!

This round brought another set of good gains which we saw throughout this past weekend. I hope to have my update on Nicholas post done soon…..

“Why should I be forced to pay money to a system that I know to be largely based on fraud…? If I had a choice, I would buy insurance that covers alternative and naturopathic care, where doctors respect the healing ability of the human body and try to work with the patient instead of assaulting him with chemicals and surgeries. Obama’s health care reform bill gives me no such choice. I cannot choose to direct my money into a system of medicine that I WANT. . Instead, I am being forced to pay money into a system that is morally corrupt and scientifically fraudulent.”

I could not agree more, Mike.

Harvard Takes it Back and Says Swine Flu was Oversold

There are so many of us who were way ahead of you, Harvard – where’s our complimentary degree?

Harvard Takes it Back and Says Swine Flu was Oversold
    Dr Mercola – January 2, 2010

A new analysis from Harvard University, using H1N1 deaths in the U.S. in the spring and projecting likely outcomes for this fall, suggests that the swine flu “pandemic” has been oversold.
The new paper suggests swine flu was unlikely to create a severe epidemic. In light of this, officials have taken many steps that may have been unnecessary, including mass vaccinations.

It is not clear how H1N1 will act in the coming months, but swine flu cases seem to have already hit their peak.

Sugar May Be Bad, But This Sweetener Is Far More Deadly
    http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/01/02/HighFructose-Corn-Syrup-Alters-Human-Metabolism.aspx

Scientists have proved for the first time that fructose, a cheap form of sugar used in thousands of food products and soft drinks, can damage human metabolism and is fueling the obesity crisis.

Fructose, a sweetener usually derived from corn, can cause dangerous growths of fat cells around vital organs and is able to trigger the early stages of diabetes and heart disease.

Over 10 weeks, 16 volunteers on a controlled diet including high levels of fructose produced new fat cells around their heart, liver and other digestive organs. They also showed signs of food-processing abnormalities linked to diabetes and heart disease. Another group of volunteers on the same diet, but with glucose sugar replacing fructose, did not have these problems.
