CAFTA and Dietary Supplements

The Codex Alimentarius Commission, organized by the United Nations in the 1960s, is charged with “harmonizing” food and supplement rules among all nations of the world. As a result of Codex rules, those vitamins and minerals that would compete with medicines would require a doctor’s prescription. The European Union has already adopted Codex-type regulations that will be in effect across Europe later this year (2005). This raises concerns that Europeans will challenge our relatively open market for health supplements in a WTO forum. This is hardly far-fetched, as Congress has already changed our tax laws to comply with a WTO order.

Make no mistake about it: those international standards are moving steadily toward the Codex regime and its draconian restrictions on health freedom. Pharmaceutical companies have spent billions of dollars trying to get Washington to regulate your dietary supplements. So far, that effort has failed, in part because of a 1994 law called the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. Big Pharma and the medical establishment hate this Act, because it allows consumers some measure of freedom to buy the supplements they want.

The largely government-run “healthcare” establishment, including the nominally private pharmaceutical companies, want government to control the dietary-supplement industry so that only they can manufacture and distribute supplements providing any real benefit. If this takes place, as it has in Europe, the high-potency, beneficial supplements that you can now buy over the counter will be available, if at all, only by prescription and at a much higher cost. This alone is sufficient reason for Congress to oppose the unconstitutional, freedom-destroying CAFTA bill.

FDA and Congress are also working (FDA quite openly, Congress more covertly) toward the goal of harmonizing our health laws with Codex Alimentarius standards and guidelines.

So much difference in ONE day.

This weekend, we are in the midst of chelation round #2. We are using DMSA only at the moment. We will be adding ALA next round, next Friday. The current dose Nicholas is getting every 3-4 hours is 8.33mg which is 1/3 of the 25 mg capsule. I mix 3 teaspoons of juice with one dmsa capsule. It takes a few minutes to really mix it in there well and then I store 1 teaspoon in each syringe and put them in the fridge. When it’s time, we shoot the syringe into a cup and Nicholas drinks it. During the night, we’re putting it into a baby bottle and he takes one gulp and it’s gone – he doesn’t even wake up.

It is stirring up a bit of yeast, but it’s not crazy yeast like we have seen in the past. I’m giving plenty of probiotics, Ther-Biotic Complete, Threelac and Saccharomyces Boulardii. Also giving GSE and diflucan in the am, followed by probiotics in the afteroon and evening.

Yesterday, I took Nicholas to Target. It was pouring so hard that all of the shopping carts outside were soaked, so I had Nicholas go inside to get one – and wouldn’t you know, they were all stuck together. For the first 20 minutes we were there, I felt like one of those normal parents who can walk around a store with their child following behind them. Nicholas found the Thomas aisle and he pushed a playset all around the store (while I tried to find a dry cart and pick up what I needed). He added a building and 2 of the electronic trains with the remotes (all Thomas) and was trying to push them all in one stack. Watching him do this was amazing. He finally handed me two of the boxes to hold while he pushed the others. It was too funny.
He did go through a spurt where he left the toys behind and went running through the aisles. It was more in a provoke mommy kind of way – which has been way different from the past. I let him do it for a few minutes and then told him he was going home to bed if he didn’t stop – so he stopped. (This still amazes me) Anyway, I found a cart and loaded him and his treasures into the cart and headed to get some nighttime pull ups. He was talking up a storm about the toys he found – I just didn’t have the heart to put them back. I figured I’d give him one and put the rest away for his birthday.
So, then, we met Daddy and his friend at the Outback for dinner. Yep, you are reading correctly. Not only did I attempt Target, but I was taking him to a restaurant too. Yeah, I must be nuts. You can say it, it’s okay. 🙂
Compared to the past, Nicholas was amazing. He wanted to sit up front by the window and watch the rain – so we let him – our table wasn’t far and daddy and I took turns hanging out with him. Finally, he realized we had a toy and his dvd player, so he made his way into our booth. No fussing, no tantrums. He left the booth a few times to check things out, but always came back quickly (one of us went with him). I got to eat a meal from a restaurant, on a plate – and the meal was HOT. (Good thing because I ordered lobster tails – see, I had high hopes afterall)
We got home and I brought the Thomas set in and was leaving the rest in the car. One, because it was pouring rain and two, I figured I’d bring them in and hide them for his birthday. No such luck. Nicholas got out of his seat and grabbed the bag with the others. So, Percy and the building box were on the dining room table and I opened the Thomas train and Nicholas was busy playing with that. (It has a remote control like geotrax, so he was in heaven.) I started putting together the play set, which is way too cool – and I hid Percy and the building. A little while later, Nicholas says, “mommy – where’s percy?” I was stunned. I have never heard him actually say “percy” before. He’ll say Thomas, Blues Clues, Bear, etc – but never heard that. So, I caved and pulled Percy out and gave it to him – I couldn’t resist.
Later, he came over and said, “mommy, dora the explorer on TV please, mommy.” – Ok, dora the explorer sounded like “dora the hora” but I’ll take it. Twice in one day – I can’t believe it. We have never heard him say “dora” much less “dora the explorer”
So, we’re watching the Christmas Dora – he picked it, I wasn’t going to argue. And he suddenly knows who Santa is. Seeing him point to Santa and yell Santa was absolutely delightful. Maybe this year we will actually have to say presents came from Santa – wouldn’t that be something?
Before our store trip – Nicholas climbed up on his dresser – thank goodness it’s a low one, but still. He called me into his room and then pointed at a framed zebra print that’s been hanging on his wall from before he was born. “mommy picture” What’s that a picture of Nicholas? “zebra” – Then he points to the border on his wall and says, “tiger, elephant, zebra, tiger, elephant, zebra” and was pointing all the way around the room. Had he never seen any of this before? He was looking at them, admiring them as if he was seeing them for the first time.
So, as we’re sitting on the couch watching TV getting ready to go to bed, I looked at Nicholas, gave him a kiss and told him that I loved him. He said, “i lub you too mommy” – I cried.
I can’t believe how much difference we saw in one day. One day. One very good day.

Flame retardant chemicals found in toddler’s blood

Flame retardant chemicals found in toddler’s blood

Fire retardant chemicals found in toddlers’ blood

By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY
A new study finds that young children have high levels of chemical fire retardants in their blood.
Toddlers and preschoolers had levels of the chemicals that were on average three times higher than their mothers’, according to a study of 20 families by the Environmental Working Group, which has campaigned against the chemicals for several years. The chemicals, called polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, are widely used in televisions, remote controls, computers, mattresses and other products.

Scientists are concerned that the chemicals cause brain damage in animals and may cause hyperactivity in children, says Jimmy Roberts, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ committee on environmental health, who was not involved with the study. Doctors also are concerned that the chemicals affect the reproductive organs and hormone systems. A Danish study in 2007 found that boys whose mothers had high levels of fire retardants in their breast milk were more likely to have undescended testicles.

“The government should really look into taking greater steps to protecting our kids,” Roberts says.

Although Roberts says flame retardants may protect children by slowing the spread of fires, he says government regulators and manufacturers should find less toxic alternatives.

Babies and children are especially vulnerable to fire retardants, says Linda Birnbaum, senior toxicologist with the Environmental Protection Agency. Children are exposed through breastfeeding, as well as by crawling around in household dust, which is often highly contaminated with fire retardants. Babies may also be in greater danger because their bodies are still developing, she says.

Birnbaum notes that Americans tend to have much higher levels of fire retardants in their bodies than Europeans, because fire safety requirements in the USA are much stricter. Europe also more strictly limits the use of fire retardants, the report says.

Although two kinds of fire retardants, known as Penta and Octa, are no longer made in the USA, they are found in older products, the report says. Penta also may be found in imported in furniture. Roberts say the government should close that loophole. “If you are going to ban it in the U.S., then you should ban it in imports,” Roberts says.

Another fire retardant, called Deca, is still widely used. The report notes that some companies — such as Nokia, Sony-Ericsson and Samsung — no longer use Deca and are phasing out related fire retardants, according to the report.

John Kyte, a spokesman for an industry group called the Bromine Science and Environmental Forum, says the levels of fire retardants found in children in the study were low — an average of 62 parts per billion in children, compared to 25 parts per billion in their mothers.

Kyte notes that the bulk of research on fire retardants comes from animal studies.

“Flame retardants save actual human lives, and no illness, ailment or harm to any human anywhere has ever been reported as a result of exposure to Deca, even among those who work producing the material,” Kyte says. “Potential concerns such as those raised by this study are the reason scientists and regulators are looking closely at this issue, and we support such monitoring and analysis.”

TIPS ON FIRE RETARDANTS

Environmentalists say it may be impossible to completely avoid fire retardants because the chemicals are found in food and the dust created by many everyday products, but here are a few suggestions:

Inspect foam items. Replace anything with a ripped cover or foam that is misshapen or breaking down. If you can’t replace them, try to keep the covers intact.

Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which are better at removing contaminants. HEPA-filter air cleaners also may reduce contaminants in the air.

Don’t reupholster foam furniture, which may contain fire retardants.

Be careful when removing old carpet padding, which may contain fire retardants. Vacuum and mop up as much as possible of the dust created when removing carpet padding.

Ask manufacturers what types of fire retardants they use. Opt for less flammable fabrics, such as leather, wool and cotton. Look for brands that have publicly committed to phasing out all brominated fire retardants: Acer, Apple, Eizo Nanao, LG Electronics, Lenovo, Matsushita, Microsoft, Nokia, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony-Ericsson and Toshiba.

First day of School

So, today was Nicholas’s first day of school. The last couple of days, we’ve been talking about the school bus coming and him going to school again – and he’s been getting excited about going on the bus again. Today, he was apprehensive until he saw that bus – then it was love at first site.

He came home smiling and happy and today’s been the best day in a long time. He helped me do laundry and hang hangers tonight and has been the calmest, most content Nicholas I’ve seen in a long time. He told me several times that he did coloring at school (which I know is true because they sent home his artwork.)

Here’s Nicholas getting off the bus today:

CDC Misses Target With Flawed MMR/Autism Study

From the National Autism Association:
CDC Misses Target With Flawed MMR/Autism Study

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release:

Rita Shreffler, NAA (Nixa, MO) 401-632-6452

CDC Misses Target With Flawed MMR/Autism Study
NAA says: Wrong Question Asked. Wrong Children Studied. Wrong Conclusions Reached.

Nixa, MO – A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study released today claims there is no link between the MMR vaccine and autism. The National Autism Association (NAA) says this study does nothing to dispel the growing public concern over a vaccine-autism connection and raises several questions concerning design and methodology.

For years, parents have claimed that MMR triggered their child’s subsequent GI (gastrointestinal) disease and autism. In a 2002 paper where the majority of autistic children were found to have measles in their intestines, the children examined showed a clear temporal link between MMR exposure and regression. The CDC’s attempt to replicate the 2002 study fell far short of proving the safety of the MMR vaccine.

The CDC study was designed to detect persistent measles virus in autistic children with GI problems. The assumption being if there is no measles virus at the long delayed time of biopsy, there is no link between autism and MMR. But NAA says this underlying assumption is wrong. The questions should have been: Do normally developing children meeting all milestones have an MMR shot, develop GI problems and then regress into autism? Do they have evidence of measles and disease in their colons compared to non-vaccinated age and sex matched controls?

In the current CDC study, only a small subgroup of children was the correct phenotype to study. From page 7, “Only 5 of 25 subjects (20%) had received MMR before the onset of GI complaints and had also had onset of GI episodes before the onset of AUT (P=0.03).” The other 20 autistic children in the study had GI problems but the pathology developed before the MMR vaccine. Additionally, the controls all received the MMR vaccine and had gastrointestinal symptoms. The controls should have been free of exposure to vaccine measles in order to make a comparison relevant for purposes of causation.

Inflammatory bowel disease in the absence of MMR RNA does not mean that MMR shot didn’t precipitate the GI disease and didn’t precipitate autism. A similar example would be rheumatic fever where the infection is cleared quickly but damage to the heart and/or brain last a lifetime.

Public confidence in the safety of vaccines is at risk until safety studies are performed that are required by law, ethics, and science. NAA calls for a vaccinated vs. non-vaccinated study comparing all health outcomes including autism. The CDC is in charge of vaccine safety, owns patents to vaccines (according to a UPI Investigative Report from 2003) and is in charge of promoting vaccines. The public should demand that vaccine safety be taken away from an agency with such conflicts and support HR#1973, the Vaccine Safety and Public Confidence Assurance Act.”

Out to dinner….

So, Grandma and Mommy (me) took Nicholas out to dinner tonight. Not burger king, not McDonalds – we took a step up to Fuddruckers. Which by the way, we had been to before and it was nothing short of a sensory nightmare for Nicholas. Well, last night showed me just how far we had truly come. At first, Nicholas ran in, saw the soda machine and wanted to set up shop there, but I was able to get him away from it in a reasonable amount of time and WITHOUT a tantrum. We went into the side that has the kiddy games and such and Nicholas ran around with the other kids checking out the games. When the food came out, he came to the table and sat down and ate with us. I did not have to shove him in the end of a booth while he’s screaming to get out. He got up on a chair, sat down, and started eating. When he was done, he wanted to go back and play, but I stalled him a bit because I was still eating. No issues, no tantrums. In the past, it has been do what Nicholas wants immediately or else!!! Anyway, we let him play again for a little while, then we told him we had to go back to Mommy’s truck – and that was pretty much it. Yes, we survived yet another outing. No tantrums, no embarassing moments, no crying, no dragging Nicholas out, nothing. Amazing.
