School days, school days

Nicholas had a great two days back to school after the holidays – Wes is back and he’s doing really well playing with him too.

MB-12 this morning.  (missed a morning because I was so sick and couldn’t get up to give it to him)

Soy is a HUGE no no in this house!

So, I’ve been having a bit of trouble getting Nicholas’s supplements into him lately.  Just to get them into him, I grabbed a 4 pack of the Gerber yogurt-juice drinks that he used to love so much.  (I had to take these away because of the soy in them – and he loved them)  So, I was able to get his supplements into him this way, but boy, with one small dose of the soy – he walked around in a fog for most of the day until it wore off.  Truly amazing and awful to see all at the same time.  Glad I had witnesses on this one, sometimes I think people think I’m nuts with the stuff that comes out of his mouth.

Biomed is Quackery

So, I’m surfing the web tonight looking for famous people who have autism and what I found instead were blogs from mothers and fathers who have children with autism that truly think nothing can be done to help their children, so they sit and blog negative articles about those who have healed or are healing their children.  They think that the biomedical approach is quackery.

My heart goes out to all of those children.

I sit here and I wonder… what exactly is so “biomedical” about removing milk from your child’s diet?  Just this past week, we visited with friends who also have a son with autism.  Two days into our visit, we told them to chuck the milk.  In just a couple of days, they’ve seen a major difference.  Just from milk.

And yet, these other parents just do nothing.  They have the time to sit and type total crap into their blog about how they can’t believe Jenny McCarthy, and etc etc.  So much for helping your child.  You can’t believe the struggles and the journey she went through with her son because she used to be a playboy bunny… but, you can buy the crap your kid’s pediatrician feeds you everytime they pull out that syringe.  Why, because they have a degree in medicine?  Their background isn’t in researching vaccinations or infectious disease.  All they know about that is what they’re told by pharmaceutical reps or what’s written in the pamphlet provided to them by the drug companies.  Doctors that have changed their practices to help our kids are angels.  Yes, there are plenty who are just out there to rip you off, but the majority are angels.

To those of you who think the biomedical approach is quackery, I grieve for the life your children could have had if you had just taken one chance to see if it helped them, but didn’t because you’d rather call us quacks.

I’n proud to be a quack and I have a recovering son to prove I’m not such a quack afterall.  Peace!

I wish I had never used Soy Formula

I’m not very happy with myself right now and I hope that my utter stupidity has not permanently effected my son.  Soy is not good for you.  Everything I read points me in that direction.  What the heck was I thinking giving my son Soy Formula?  and then at 12 months, when he refused milk, we switched to the toddler soy formula – so he was on that until he was about 2 years old.  For 2 years, we fed him soy.  We didn’t know any better – we thought we were doing the right thing.  I so hope this post helps someone.  Don’t feed your perfect little angel soy formula, the risks just are not worth it.  I wish they would take it off the market.  There are alternatives.

What does Soy do exactly??? Here’s a few highlights with links to more info at the bottom.

Proteins in Soybeans act as potent enzyme inhibitors, which means that they block the enzymes needed for protein digestion.

Soy formula can cause vitamin deficiencies, which we have witnessed with our son.  It increases the body’s requirements for b-12, which is vital for good health.  This may explain why Nicholas is soaring on the b-12 injections.

Aluminum content is 10 times that of a milk-based formula.  10 times.  10 times.  10 times.  Sorry, had to say that so it sunk in.    Did I mention that Nicholas has way too much aluminum in his system?  Perhaps this is why.  Aluminum is toxic and has even been implicated in causing Alzheimers.

It lacks cholesterol, lactose and galactose – which are essential for the development of the brain and nervous system.

Did you know that toxicologists have estimated that an infant who is exclusively fed soy formula receives the estrogen equivalent of at least 5 birth control pills per day?  On a male baby, what do you think the effects of this much estrogen would be?  Especially since they go through a testosterone surge during their first few months, which is when the development of his sexual organs happens.  and yet, soy formula is still being produced, why?

The Weston Price Foundation has an article that is a must read when considering formula for your infant.  Click here to read it.

Wake Forest University has a study on soy and male monkeys, which is also a must read.  Click here to read it.

Dr. Mercola has an interesting article on his site as well, “How Safe is Infant Soy Formula?” Click here to read it.

Toxic Baby Bottles…. when does the madness end?

I’ve been angry about this for months… months.  Seriously.  But, I had to add it to the blog in hopes that someone will learn something they didn’t know and buy baby bottles which will bring no harm to their child.

Nicholas used to use the Dr. Browns bottles.  and I loved them.  No gas.  Despite all of the pieces, they were fantastic.  But, there’s one problem.  One very big problem.  They contain BPA.  What is BPA?  Bisphenol-A is a endocrine-disrupting hormone which can leach out of the bottle and into your baby’s milk, formula or breast milk.    It is a plastic softener used in the production of polycarbonate plastic — i.e. many brands of clear baby bottles including the Dr. Browns.   After hearing this, I threw all of them away.  Gone.  Forever.   I have ZERO trust in a company that says that these are “deemed safe by the US Food and Drug Administration” – that statement is utterly useless to me at this point.  They have BPA and BPA is not anything I want any child of mine ingesting, so we’ll look to other alternatives, thank you very much.  Right now, glass is the only alternative I’m interested in.   At least I know in 10 years, they won’t find something else that was leaching out of the glass.

They tell you not to microwave the bottles because it will create “hot spots” in the formula.  When I checked out the safety of microwaving the Dr. Browns, the plastic was approved for being microwaved.  Even if you didn’t microwave the bottle, you still may have put it into a boiling pot of hot water to sterilize it or even into your hot dishwasher which I did.   Either way, the bottles are still being heated, allowing the BPA to leach into the contents of the bottle.  Nice.  Way to go looking out for our kids.

Z Recommends has a great report on bottles and sippy cups and how each company holds up.  Check it out for more info.

Don’t be fooled… “natural flavors” and “artificial flavors” are the same… Chemical Additives!

More and more lately, I’ve noticed the term, natural flavors on food labels.  I used to see artificial flavors, but now I’m seeing more of the other.    With all of my researching, I’m finding that the term natural flavors is no different from artificial flavors – and what are they??  Chemical Additives!  Yep, good ole chemical additives.  The next time you wonder where that vanilla flavor is coming from – I can guarantee you that if natural flavors is on the label, vanilla extract was no where to be found during production of that product.

I came across a blog tonight that I just have to share.  It goes into all of this and beyond, so I’m definately linking it here….

Balsamic & Red Wine Vinegar contain LEAD

Did you know it has lead in it?

Yikes!

Check out the sign on the shelf in a grocery store in California warning people about the lead.  Don’t you just love that here in NJ, or any other state, no one tells you about these things?  Sick.

Balsamic Vinegar has lead…

What ingredients make up your favorite shampoo? makeup? perfume?

Not only do we need to worry about what we eat, but we need to worry about what ingredients are used in the products we use to bathe, shampoo our hair, etc.

Cosmeticsdatabase.com breaks down tons of products, so you know exactly what you’re using.  This is a fantastic resource and a true eye-opener.

Have you ever given any thought into what Food Coloring is actually made of?

If not, you should.  I bet you didn’t know that Arsenic, Lead & Mercury are in food coloring.  It’s sickening, isn’t it?

This is a fantastic article that you should really take a look at regarding this.  Also, be sure to check out the charts they have linked – it will open your eyes for sure!

Artificial Food and Cosmetic Coloring – A Hidden Source of Toxic Metals

So tired of all the chemicals… in everything. I give up – I’m going green!

Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating.

Do you know what ingredients are in the products you use???  I mean, really know what they are??  Let me tell you, ignorance is bliss.  My head spins with these details.  It’s overwhelming.  Here’s what I’ve already done to make our house a more green environment…. and I’ll be doing more, I assure you.

I gave away every toxic cleaning product we had in the house and replaced a majority of them with the Method line of cleaners.  That’s just the beginning though, a mere tip of the chemical iceberg, so to speak.  I really like their bathroom sprays and the lavendar dish detergent.

I’m going to make my own laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc.  Yep, you read that right.  I am making my own.  Yep, the girl who thrives on convenience is going to make her own soap!  So, if you’re wondering how, I’ll post the recipies…..

Laundry Detergent:  1/2 cup borax, 1/2 washing soda and 1 cup grated fels naptha (laundry soap bar) – It’s very concentrated, you only need to use 1 tbsp on a normal load and 2 on a large or heavily soiled load.

Fabric Softener:  Take an old Downey bottle (or any bottle), fill it with White Vinegar, add a few tablespoons of baking soda (for some nice added freshness) and a few drops of Lavendar essential oil and shake.

Dishwasher Detergent: Take a tupperware container and fill with equal parts of Borax and baking Soda, each load takes 2 tablespoons.  Fill the jet dry dispenser with vinegar.

(100% Sodium Carbonite from a pool store should work just as well as the washing soda in case you cannot find it)

and that’s just the beginning.  These companies have lost my money on their toxic products.
