Summer School Party

The last day of school is this week, so today, I was invited to a pizza and ice cream party at Nicholas’s school.  When I got there and located Nicholas in a sea of other kids and parents, he was THRILLED to see me.  He wanted me to immediately come and sit with him – and share some of his pizza.  While we were sitting there, Nicholas was pointing out all kinds of things on the wall – Pluto, Mickey, his cubby – it was so amazing to see how aware he was in the classroom.  I pointed to the other kids around the table asking him, “who’s that?” “who’s he” – and he answered me each and every time!  I was so proud.

After he was done eating, it was circle time and all of the kids got up to sing songs and take turns singing into the microphone.  Twice, Nicholas pulled me into circle time to sit with him.  He really enjoyed it and loved clapping with his classmates.  He was very well behaved and was so proud that Mommy was in his classroom.  and the biggest thing… he was THERE, he was present and he was enjoying himself immensely.

I decided to take Nicholas home with me since it was almost time for the bus to leave- and he proudly walked out with me, passed all the school buses (and did not once go to try to get on one, which is really pretty amazing all on it’s own.)

Summer session begins on July 1st, so he has a little over a week’s break in between – but from mid-October through mid-July – the changes in him are unbelievable.  Even the differences in him in his class from Valentines day to today – are mind-blowing.  I couldn’t have been more proud of my little man.

Happy Father’s Day!

It’s Father’s Day and my two boys (Nicholas and Daddy) are still sleeping.  Dinner has been seared and is slow cooking and I’m doing some work catching up on Nicholas’s blog….

I just wanted to say Happy Father’s day to daddy and grandpas in this special little boy’s life.  You bring such fun and happiness to his life while he recovers and we see the best Nicholas when he’s a laughing, happy Nicholas – so thank you – and Happy Father’s Day!

Great DVDs for your Spectrum Kids!

I bought these for Nicholas last week and he just loves them.  They’re videos set in a music class where they learn about different things like routines, emotions, words, movement etc.  The music is lively and fun – and he just can’t get enough of Balloo, who is the cute animated character (amongst all of the real live school kids)

Music therapist Elizabeth Balzano and her bouncy friend Balloo lead a classroom of early developers through original songs and fun activities specially designed by veteran family entertainment producers under the guidance of autism consultants. Children learn to explore emotions while singing, dancing and having fun!

Keep ’em coming….

Nicholas now loves his Diego pinball machine that Grandma bought him for Christmas last year.   He’s been playing with it over the past couple of days – and now he’s asking mommy and daddy to play to – but wait, there is a catch.  He loves the way one of the things spins around when you hit it, so he just has the best time telling us to “hit this one” – so darn cute.

He was watching Dora last night and was answering all of their questions.  We were amazed.  He started answering here and there a while ago, but now it’s on a totally different level.

He picked up Dora’s Summer DVD where Dora is in a bathingsuit on a beach on the cover, handed it to me and said, “watch dora at the beach please mommy” – “Nicholas, do you remember when you and mommy went to the beach last summer?”  “Yes,  mommy”  “Do you want to go to the beach again this year?”  “YES!!!!!!!”  (Holy cow, is this my kid?)

I was lying on the couch last night and he actually jumped up and snuggled with me.  Usually I will have some role in initiating that, but this time, he did it all himself.  Got under the blanket, fixed his pillow and everything.  (and we were watching a movie for mommy, not nicholas for a change – no complaints from him either.)

Vitamins and Minerals and supplements, oh my!

Been meaning to write this out for a while….  bear with me – this is a work in progress.  I just wanted a space to keep all of my reasons for starting Nicholas on a particular supplement.  If it’s listed here, it’s because it works for him.

PS – If you’re reading my blog to help your child, please understand I am not a doctor.  I am a mother who is on a mission to heal my son.  My information comes from my own research, experience, medical journals and books, doctors, etc – please take what I have written here and do your own research before implementing any supplement plan.

Nordic Naturals – Complete Omega 3-6-9 Liquid – This was the first supplement I ever gave Nicholas.  Within 2 weeks, he started babbling/talking.  The Omegas are great for so many things; speech, eye contact, socialization, etc.  Plus it supports healthy skin, hair, joint flexibilty, normal fat metabolism and aids in maintenance of cell membrane fluidity and stability, development and function of brain and nerve tissue and more.

Brainchild Nutritionals Spectrum Support Vitamins & Minerals –  I had heard good things about these supplements and after the Omega 3-6-9 Oil was working, I decided to give them a try.  So glad I did.  They’re made especially for children who need extra neurological and metabolic support.   Right now, Nicholas takes the Ultra Sensitive Vitamins (needed a version without TMG) and the Regular Spectrum Support Minerals. (Please note: I can not recommend any of Brainchild’s other products other than their own vitamin and mineral formulas.)

Vitamin A – Nicholas takes the Green Pastures High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil for his daily supply of Vit A.  It supports immune function, vision health, fights infection by activating the immune system’s natural killer cells, activates T-cells and B-cells in the adaptive immune system which supports immune memory, protects against viruses (including measles), great for sensory perception, language processing and attention, and is necessary for cell growth and differentiation (especially in the gut and brain).  Note:  with the Vit A – Palmitate (which is the version from Kirkman) asorption is impaired if there are mucousal or PH problems in the gut and can deactivate the control switch of many metabolic pathways involved in vision and cell growth….etc. etc.   You need to give the natural version of Vit A, not the synthetic palmitate.

Vitamin C

Vitamin D –  Nicholas takes the Green Pastures High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil for his daily supply of Vit D.

Vitamin E – My main reason for adding this was to give Nicholas a boost in language.  Vitamin E was successful in doing so.  We only use the Vitamin World Natural E-400 d-alpha tocopheryl softgels.  Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radicals, reducing the effects of oxidative stress.  It promotes immune function and supports cardio health.

Folinic Acid (folic acid) – I added folinic acid after we started with the MB-12 injections because it works synergistically with the MB-12.  Folic acid supports cellular perception and response, methylation processes and many enzymatic responses in addition to supporting cardio health.

MB-12 Injections – methylcobolamin – I read alot about the positive results Dr. Neubrander was having with his MB-12 protocol and was quite interested in seeing if Nicholas would be a positive responder.  He has really excelled since we started these shots last October – so much so, that we are now giving him a shot every day instead of every third day.   For more info on MB-12, visit Dr. Neubrander’s website.

DMG – Dimethylglycine –  In all of the research I did, I saw that parents were having great successes with DMG in regards to getting their child to talk, add more words, etc.  We added DMG and got the same results.  DMG is a non-protein amino acid which assists with cellular perception and response and is also involved in maintaining healthy homocysteine levels.

Gaba –  I added this supplement to calm Nicholas down.  Gaba is an amino acid which is classified as a neurotransmitter, which are deposited at the end of nerve cells and picked up by other nerve cells in order to send impulses throughout the brain and nervous system.  Gaba is known to have a calming effect and to improves restful sleep.

Zinc – I added this supplement because I read that chewing on clothing could be a sign of  a zinc defiency.   So, I added Zinc and the chewing stopped.  I have also read that it helps with the MB-12 injections as well.  Zinc is needed for the development and maintenance of the brain, adrenals, immune system and GI tract.

Inositol – This was in the original Brainchild Vitamin Spectrum II formula that Nicholas was on, but when I had to switch to the Ultra Sensitive, I had to supplement this vitamin.  Inositol is a B vitamin and I have seen this help with compliance.  Inositol is involved in certain signaling processes that transmit messages inside cells.

Grapefruit Seed Extract – I added this to combat yeast.

Culturelle Probiotic – I added this to add some beneficial bacteria to his gut and to also assist with his yeast issue.

Virastop – I added this to help fight viruses and to also see if it would stop him from bringing every bug home from school (it worked wonders) – it has stirred up yeast, but we’re working on that!

L-Theanine – I added this to calm Nicholas down after hyperactivity came back when starting the MB-12 shots

Liverlife – I added this because I wanted to give him something to support his liver.  I read alot of really good reviews on this product and decided to give it a try.  Nicholas’s dark circles under his eyes are gone since adding this supplement.  I had read that dark circles under the eyes could mean that the liver needed support.  (It can also mean a lot of other things, such as food allergies, etc.)

Milk Thistle Extract –

Selenium – Selenium can help in making the body’s mercury less toxic.  Since we’re also doing MB-12, it is also helpful in supporting the methylation cycle.  (Selenium is not to be taken during chelation because it apparently binds mercury and prevents excretion.)  Nicholas gets his Selenium in his brainchild supplement.

Calm Child – I added this supplement on a whim while I was shopping at the Vitamin Shoppe.  I figured for 10 bucks it was worth a try.  So glad I did.  Really calms Nicholas down nicely.  He only gets 1/8 teaspoon 3x per day – that’s 1/2 the recommended dose on the bottle.  (I only have to use this every once in a while anymore!)

Oxypowder – In search of something to help Nicholas with his constipation problem, I read about Oxypowder.  Lots of parents use this quite successfully, so I decided to give this a try.  This stuff is awesome.  It helps me to keep him “going” – and with major yeast issues, it needs to get out of him asap.  This definately does the trick!

No Fenol – Nicholas does demonstrate a phenol reaction to certain foods like apples, tomatoes, etc.  When he gets crazy hyper with bright red ears and/or cheeks, then we know it’s time for a  No-Fenol.  Works like a charm.  Redness and back to normal in 10 minutes.

Peptizyde

Zyme Prime

Saccharomyces Boulardii –

Lactobacillus Acidophillus –

Advanced Formula Biocidin –

Where I buy our Supplements

I am very picky when it comes to what brands of supplements I give to Nicholas.  However, I am always looking for the best price possible!

Omega 3-6-9 Fish Oil

Nicholas has done really well with these fish oils.   When he was around 2, I started him on this one:

Nordic Naturals Omega 3-6-9 Junior
http://nordicnaturals.com/en/Products/Product_Details/98/?ProdID=1444

Once the bottle was empty, I switched him to this one:

Nordic Naturals Complete Omega 3-6-9

In looking for a natural Vitamin A and Vitamin D to give Nicholas, I am also now giving him this:

Baby Babble DVDs

These DVDs were great for my son.  They helped him tremendously with getting his babbling going again and he even started to approximate words while watching them too.

The ever-evolving Nicholas…

So, here are some more gains we’re making here….

Nicholas is telling me after he pees.  He got off of the school bus the other day – and said, “mommy pee pee” – so I said, Ok, let’s go pee-pee.  I take him into the bathroom, pull down his shorts and pull-up and he can’t go – and I can tell he is trying.  After a couple of instances like this, it hit me that he “just” went when he told me.  But hey, that’s progress!

Nicholas is playing with different toys.  I have most of his toys put away in his toyroom – and some he plays with religiously and others not so much.  He hasn’t played with his elefun game since we got it for his birthday last year – and we spent the past couple of days playing it after he brought it upstairs.  He brought up his diego pin ball game and a couple of other things.  Super!

He is seeing more of the world around him.  He never really pulled me to go across the street before – or even really tried – unless someone was standing there.  Now, he just wants to run around the neighborhood and check things out.

Last night, I was eating strawberries…. and Nicholas decided to join me!  He’s never eated an actual strawberry before.  Loves his strawberry banana juice, but he’s never eaten a whole strawberry!  He’ll usually put it in his mouth, spit it out and walk away.  Not last night. 🙂

He is seeing Daddy’s audio equipment and just has to push all of the buttons.  Earlier today, when nothing would get him to stop, I put him in his room for a time out.  After a few minutes, I went into his room and sat down on the floor and calmly told him that he was in his room because mommy asked him to stop touching the buttons and he didn’t listen.  He said, “sorry for pushing buttons mommy” — WHAT??? WOA… I was so not expecting that.
