How could having e. coli bacteria be beneficial?

Another thing that has me wondering… why would Escherichia coli (e. coli) be listed under Beneficial Bacteria on Nicholas’s Microbiology results?  Anytime I’ve ever heard of e. coli, it hasn’t been good.

Well, from what I understand, there are different strains of this bacteria.  The one I am referring to is a common bowel bacteria that we all carry and is apparently harmless.

My next question would be – can this ever become a problem?  Does this mutate?

What’s wrong with Bifidobacterium lactis (bifidum) anyway?

So, I’ve revamped Nicholas’s supplement routine, which included the removal of Kirkman’s Pro-Bio Defense.  He will be on the SCD diet and this is illegal on this diet, because of the bifidus, but I’ve been curious to know, “What’s wrong with the bifidus?”  Afterall, I’m searching for yogurt to make my own with and wouldn’t you know, I can’t find one without it.  So after much digging, here’s what I was able to find…

  • When bifidus persists into early childhood and beyond, it is correlated with celiac.  (Bifidus is present in newborns, but disappears at some point in time)
  • It has a tendency to overgrow if it has no competing bacteria
  • It increases IgA production (increased IgA-secreting cells)
  • It could act as a poly-clonal activator for B cells
  • It induces systemic antibody responses
  • It increases total secretion of major Ig isotypes as well as the number of IgA secreting cells
  • It has been implicated in the initiation of colitis and colon cancer
  • If overgrown, can cause bad bowel symptoms
  • Bifidus overgrowth is likely present in those suffering with bowel afflictions

Bear with me, I’m changing supplements again!

and here’s why….  ever since I stopped the pro-biotics for 4-5 days and then restarted them (for his microbiology stool test) – something hasn’t been right.  Now, he apparently has strep bacteria and is showing signs of PANDAS, which he NEVER did before.  I just read that it’s been mentioned by parents who have noticed a connection between probiotics containing Streptococcus __________ and the symptoms of PANDAS coming out.   GEEZ!  This is not the first time this week I’ve removed a supplement, so guess what, I am starting OVER right now.

What have I removed this week?

  1. Kirkman Micellized Vitamin A – because theirs is the palmitate (synthetic) version.  I was just came across information from Bryan Jepson’s book, “Changing the Course of Autism” and he writes that Vitamin A should be taken in the –cis form and not the palmitate form.  He writes that absorption of the palmitate form is impaired if there are mucosal or pH problems in the gut, common in autistic children.  Vitamin A palmitate can deactivate the control switch of many metabolic pathways involved in vision and cell growth, can disrupt metabolism and hormonal regulation of lipids, proteins and glycogen.
  2. Kirkman Iron – because it shouldn’t really be taken unless his ferritin is low, which I don’t know at this time. Andy Cutler has suggested that the body is keeping iron low in order totry to control some of the oxidative damage that is going on and in his experience, chelating usually brings it up.  Should his labs suggest needed an iron supplement in the future, we will revisit this in the future.
  3. Kirkman Pro-Bio Defense – because it has Streptococcus thermophilus, which apparently is a variation of a strep bacteria and from what I have read, other parents are reporting that adding supplements with any strep-variation bacteria are manifesting PANDAS symptoms – so, it’s gone.  I wasn’t planning on re-purchasing this one anyway since I will be starting the two below instead, but still!!!!!!!!  (By the way, since our stopping the pro-biotics and restarting them, Nicholas has had PANDAS symptoms appear all of a sudden, so I’m not taking any chances.)
  4. Kirkman Folinic Acid – because he gets plenty of folinic acid from other sources that he does not need any additional
  5. Culturelle Probiotic – As soon as this one runs out, I will not be re-purchasing it.  It is not legal on the SCD diet, which I am beginning to implement.
  6. Cellfood – Since I don’t know what’s truly in this, I can’t give this to him any longer.  I’ve spoken with lots of parents who have seen great things, but it’s been long enough and we’re not seeing miracles happen here with it, so it’s gone!
  7. Threelac – Once I get started into the SCD diet, it’s gone as it is not SCD legal.  If we need to revisit using this again in the future, we will.

What have I added recently?

  1. Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil – to replace the Kirkman Micellized Vitamin A
  2. Nordic Naturals EPA – to balance out the DHA/EPA ratio

What will I be adding this coming week?

  1. Kirkman Lactobacillus Acidophilus – I need to add an SCD-legal probiotic to replace the ones I’ve removed
  2. Kirkman SACCHAROMYCES BOULARDII – this is a non-pathogenic yeast which will help the GI tract, also SCD-legal.

What have I reduced the dosage on?

  1. Vitamin World Vitamin E d-alpha tocopheryl – down to 400IU (I want to see how his language does on this dose – when I increased to 800 IU initially, I saw a big surge in language)
  2. Carlson’s Vitamin D – down to 400IU (he’s getting plenty through his multi vitamins, so no need for a huge amount)

Which supplement brands are being switched so they’re SCD-legal?

  1. Kirkman Vit C is being replaced by Nutricology Buffered Vitamin C powder
  2. Twin Labs Zinc is being replaced by Kirkman Zinc Bio-Max Series
  3. Vitamin Shoppe L-Theanine is being replaced by Enzymatic Therapy L-Theanine  (I don’t think Theanine is legal, but without it, we’re in hyper-hell)

Day 4: Diflucan

Nicholas seems to be getting back to being himself.  Although it’s getting hard to keep him IN the house.  It’s been beautiful here – and he just wants to be outside at all times!

Grandma and Mommy took Nicholas to Chili’s today for lunch.  He was a bit apprehensive about getting into the booth – it took about 15 minutes to get him to sit down with us (and that usually does not happen anymore) – once he got into the booth, he was fine.  Whew!

Day 3: Diflucan

He seems to be getting better.  Not pooping much, even with oxypowder – which says that he’s terribly constipated due to the yeast die-off.  Gotta up the oxypowder…

We spent alot of time outside today.  He really loves being outside.  Playing in water, the sandbox, driving his car, etc – just loves it.  I cringe thinking about the day when he asks to go camping – because of course, my idea of camping is staying at a 5 Star hotel.  Thank goodness the boy scouts camp – daddy can handle that one.

Day 2: Diflucan

Nicholas hasn’t been himself since we started the diflucan.  He’s not necessarily being bad, he just isn’t “him”.  Tonight after his bath, he climbed into our bed and just lied there watching tv – it was not like him at all.  I’m sure he feels awful – his appetite at dinner seems smaller.  After school, he’s still eating almost 8 chicken nuggets, I know he works up an appetite at school.

He came off of the bus all sweaty and red (face and ears) today.  Turns out he had a HUGE temper tantrum when it was time to go inside from the playground to go home.  He had a tantrum until he realized the bus was there, then got on and came home.  I feel so bad, he just doesn’t understand sometimes.

Day 1: Diflucan

I threw in the towel on fighting the yeast myself and had the dr call in an Rx for diflucan.  Here’s hoping it does something!!

What am I working on now?

I have so much floating around in my head this past week, I need a place to keep my thoughts straight – here it is.  If you have something to contribute – by all means – email me at momatrecoveringnicholas.com, replace “at” with the @.

Here’s my laundry list:

I have Nicholas’s current microbiology results back.  Two kinds of strep, a staph, and two other bacteria’s I am looking up.  I am not finding much information on what these strains of bacteria actually are – but I haven’t given up quite yet.  The strep I had a feeling about – this probably points to PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections) –  he has a bit of OCD lately with certain things – once he gets an idea in his head – there is literally no standing in his way or you will have a non-re-directable temper-tantruming child on your hands.  Glad I know this, now I can work to get rid of it.

I also have Nicholas’s IgG and IgE Food Antibody Assessments back so I can remove the offending foods from his diet and not just replace them with other offending foods.  My head is spinning with this, so I’m leaving this alone for a bit.  I’ll be back. — IgG’s can trigger an allergic response 3 days later.

I have to check the amount of folinic he is getting – I want to make sure I am not giving him too much.

Ever since we stopped his yeast-protocol for the microbiology test, his stomach blew up – most likely filled with yeast.  I’ve gotten it down over an inch (we measured him, his belly was 25 inches!) – but his belly isn’t going down any more – and his poop has been consistently yeasty – so what is going on here?  Perhaps I need Nystatin and really knock it out.

I put biotin on hold for a bit – I know it’s supposed to fight yeast, but I am wondering if it’s causing it here.

I’m looking into getting the Glutathione cream.  GSH is the main anti-oxidant which prevents free radical=inducded cellular damage from oxidative stress and maintains mitochondrial integrity.  (I’d get the caps, but I hear that they can cause irritability or hyper – yeah, no thanks, we’ve got enough of that here)

I’m looking into P5P – pyridoxyl-5-phosphate (B6)

B-1 – Thiamine – supplementing this is a useful adjunct to chelating agents in removal of lead and other metals — keeping this one on the back burner until we’re ready to chelate.

K – protects cell membranes from oxidative stress damage, prevents cell death associated with glutamate toxicity and glutathione depletion in neurons, decreases inflammation, also for oxalates

I’ve gotten the impression that I should not be giving Nicholas a calcium supplement – need to do more research on this one.

I need to check on selenium – as his selenium status wil need to be monitored because of potential toxicity at high levels.  (Upper limit on this supplement is 400-450mcg per day for an adult)

N-Acetyl cysteine replensihes GSH stores and is shown to chelate mercury, cadmium, boron, arsenic

oxytocin nasal spray helps to improve socialization and decrease fearful responses – have to do more research here.

I have to check into pecanbread site for the raw milk yogurt which will remove the casein.

Broccoli sprouts were mentioned at the recent DAN! conference – need to look into that more.

Look into VSL3 probiotics
